About 3GCI
3GCI is a poverty solution initiative that was founded in 2010 as a partnership between the private sector, educational institutions, and civil society organizations to help meet the Millennium Development Goals as established by the United Nations. We are governed by a board of directors from the private, public and civil sectors. Our core executive staff is based in New York City, with an international panel of advisors, global supporters, partner organizations, and associates in other U.S. cities.
Our Challenge
The United Nation reports the world's population is expected to rise from 6.7 billion in 2007 to 9.2 billion in 2050, with population increases in urban areas expected to rise from 3.3 billion to 6.4 billion. This rapid urbanization is resulting in increased urban poverty with staggering numbers of people living in slums where there is a lack of access to basic public services such as education, healthcare, energy, water, sanitation facilities, and efficient transportation.
Historically, in developing nations urban development has proceeded in a haphazard fashion, resulting in infrastructure that is unfit to last or adapt. Consequently, both the residing populations and the environment have suffered. Prior urban development has been shown to not be long lasting or able to adapt to changes in the population, environment, and new technology.
Our Vision
Through well-designed and comprehensive, grid cities, communities will have the capacity to consistently meet their basic human needs. By fostering developmental partnerships, 3GCI will help reduce poverty and enhance economic growth in these cities, creating bustling, dynamic cities in which people live happy, healthy and productive lives.
